01: Akira Sakano, a Future without Waste

Our future largely relies on the waste reduction to which we can all contribute on a community and on a personal level.

In this exciting talk, Akira Sakano, Chair of the Board of the Directors of the Zero Waste Academy shares her wisdom how we can build zero waste cities. Akira guides us through Kamikatsu’s zero waste operation, and gives us the best advices how we can live plastic-free lives and become conscious global citizens.

Kamikatsu zero waste city

  • The  77% of total waste collected at the town’s recycling center got recycled as of 2014.
  • The city achieved a 90% re-used rate at the town’s Kuru-kuru shop; the citizens brought 10 tons and took away an outstanding 9 tons.
  • A whopping 100% of organic waste is recycled at homes by composting leftovers.
  • The town even was able to to cut back the cost of waste management to less than one third to the estimated cost of burning the waste.
  • As a result of this successful operation more than 2,500 visitors per year.
