Dosomethingfornothing, Happiness is costless

January 24, 2017

For the past year, hairdresser Josh Coombes has been giving the streets of London a makeover…for free! Wanting to do more for the homeless than just “give them a bit of loose change”, Josh sought to create situations that provoke empathy and make those less fortunate feel that someone cares. Here began the idea to give free haircuts to people living on the streets whilst chatting to them about their lives at the same time.

“Thank you for my bit of happiness” – Paul (one of Josh’s clients)

From here began the social movement #Dosomethingfornothing. #Dosomethingfornothing is based on the premise that “we are all able to do something for someone; for nothing”. The idea is to do a small, simple act for someone and share the image on instagram.

It’s not just about cutting hair. You can give someone flowers, buy someone a cup of coffee – any small deed that makes someone feel cared forthought about.  The idea isn’t to change someone’s life, it’s just a little act to make a small difference. After all, it is the little things in life that matter. When the hashtag and online presence grows, it is hoped others are inspired to do the same.

To give this movement the justice it deserves, you need to see it. Here I have collected just 5 of the images from the instagram page of #dosomethingfornothing to give you a feel of what it’s all about. These images show how the concept has began as free haircuts for the homeless and then grown to include any random acts of kindness. The movement has also spread across the globe with one image coming all the way from Brazil!

Do you see how easy it can be to add a little bit of light to someone’s life? How about doing something for someone for nothing today? While you’re at it, why not record this positive action on a “Good Card” so you can see how far your good deed spreads?

Encourage others to start doing small acts of kindness, share this article!
